Yankees’ regular leaves with injury during 1st-inning homer barrage

BALTIMORE — The Yankees were enjoying a historic first inning Tuesday night at Oriole Park when an injury add some concern along with the excitement of their home run show.

After Ben Rice hit the Yankees’ fourth homer of the inning to tie a MLB record they set on March 29, second baseman Jazz Chisholm left that game an injury to his mid-back region after reaching third base on a double and error.

Chisholm fouled off a pitch from Orioles starter Kyle Gibson, took a ball and then stepped out and twisted his back a few times looking like he was trying to get loose. A team trainer and manager Aaron Boone headed to the batter’s box area to check on Chisholm, who elected to continue hitting,

Chisholm laced the next pitch into the right-field corner for extra bases and ended up on third when Ramon Laureano bobbled the ball trying to retrieve it.

After reaching third, Chisholm immediately was removed from the game and replaced by pinch-hitter Oswald Peraza, who took over at second base.

The Yankees called the injury right flank discomfort.
