Last October, the Yankees and Royals squared off in their first playoff series since 1980, renewing a historic rivalry. I think the popular notion is that this was mostly a mismatch and that New York easily took care of KC in four games.

But if it was a mismatch, then the Yanks played down to the competition, narrowly winning Game 1 by a bad-call-aided run and losing Game 2 to head to Kauffman Stadium having given away home-field advantage. The beginning of Giancarlo Stanton’s playoff heroics bailed them out in the eighth inning of Game 3 (another one-run win) before Gerrit Cole took over to help close out the series with a 3-1 victory. Do the Yankees get credit for finding a way and using their star power to get past the Royals? Of course. I just think that there’s been some revisionist history.
Anyway, that’s all in the past now, and none of Cole, Stanton, or Juan Soto have anything to do with the current on-field Yankees as the Royals return to town. Today on the site, Sam will preview this particular three-game set against KC, Jake tackles the Rivalry Roundup, and John checks in on another Royals/Yankees matchup that happened to occur 25 years ago today. Later on, Nick S. will praise the Ben Rice/Paul Goldschmidt leadoff effort, and Madison will post the latest mailbag prompt.
