While it is far from the biggest meteor shower of the year, Monday night and Tuesday night are the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower!Conditions will not be perfect for Monday night as cloud coverage will be rather stubborn for at least the first half of the night. However, we will have an opportunity for some partial clearing later tonight when the peak of Monday night’s meteor shower occurs.

Here is my forecast during the pre-dawn Tuesday hours:

The best chance for the clearest skies between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM Tuesday (pre-dawn Tuesday) will occur over areas near and especially south of Syracuse.Looking ahead to Tuesday night into pre-dawn Wednesday, skies should be much clearer. While technically Tuesday night may have a few less actual meteor showers than Monday night, skies should be much more cooperative to view the Lyrids. Therefore, if you are unable to see them, you have a second chance late Tuesday night since skies should be much clearer!

The Lyrid meteor showers occur when the Earth’s orbit around the sun crosses the path of Comet Thatcher. The Lyrids are on the coldest recorded meteor showers with observations going back to 687 B.C.!

Let’s look ahead to the rest of the week:

As shown above, we have some warmer weather ahead Thursday and Friday.

Here are my forecast high temperatures ahead & how they compare to normal:
