The Beatles Movies: Sony Sets Unique Release Date Plan for 4-Film Event

Sam Mendes‘ four separate biographical features on the members of The Beatles now have a release date window. The filmmaker, who won the Best Director Oscar for his 1999 movie American Dreams, revealed the news while appearing alongside the four actors who would play John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr at Sony‘s CinemaCon presentation.

The Beatles’ four movies to come out in April 2028

Sam Mendes appeared at CinemaCon, an annual event hosted for Hollywood at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Monday night and announced that all four Beatles biopics would release in theaters in April 2028.

The four stars of the movies — Harris Dickinson, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan — were also present at the event, confirming the reports of their casting. Dickinson has been cast as Lennon, Mescal as McCartney, Quinn as Harrison, and Keoghan as Starr.

While Mendes didn’t disclose the release order of the movies, he did say that the production for all four movies would last more than a year. The official longline for The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event reads, “Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary” (via Deadline).

Mendes’ Neal Street Productions will produce the features in association with Apple Corps for Sony Pictures. The filmmaker will serve as producer along with Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor, also representing Neal Street, and Alexandra Derbyshire.

According to Mendes, The Beatles “redefined the culture and stayed with you for a lifetime” and was perhaps “the most significant band of all time.” He explained that he’d been trying to do a film on the band “for years” but “gave up” after coming to the conclusion that the “story was too big for one film.”

He didn’t want to turn it into a TV show either. Eventually, he decided to make four separate movies instead. “There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation … I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that,” the Skyfall director elaborated (via The Guardian).
