Ruben Amorim reaction — Manchester United boss speaks after humbling loss at Newcastle

Ruben Amorim watched Manchester United concede four times for the first time in his Premier League tenure, a 4-1 humbling at the hands of hosts Newcastle United on Sunday.

It was 1-1 at the break but Harvey Barnes scored twice in the second half to key the Magpies’ three-goal win, stopping the Red Devils short of back-to-back league wins.

Amorim’s side had drawn 2-2 with Lyon on Thursday in the first leg of a Europa League quarterfinal tie, and his team may’ve put one eye on the second leg after Newcastle reclaimed the match’s advantage.

But a game with some promising moments of pressure faded into another Man United loss, and Amorim cut a frustrated figure on Sunday.

Here’s what he said.

What went wrong? “Many mistakes. They were stronger to the second balls. They were a better team but we made a lot of mistakes that make it harder to win a game.”

What’s going wrong? Mentality, confidence, form? “It’s a little bit of everything. It’s hard to point to one thing going wrong at this moment. It’s really hard to win against these top teams like Newcastle. When we make mistakes it’s hard but let’s focus on Thursday. … We can do so much better. That’s it. Let’s focus on Thursday. I don’t like this game but all the mistakes today we can’t do on Thursday.”

Do you understand criticism of players’ efforts: “I understand it. I don’t care. Nothing is worse than losing games. People can say whatever they want to say. I don’t want to defend myself because if you look at our position in the table it says it all. Let’s move on. Losing games is the hardest part by far in this job.”
