Rainfall could reach 8 inches — police urge drivers to heed flood warnings

With a chance of rain and severe storms, the Fort Smith Police Department wanted to remind and caution the city’s residents and visitors to avoid driving into areas prone to flooding.

“Please do not risk driving into flooded areas, especially when a barricade is present,” said FSPD public information officer Aric Mitchell. “When heavy flooding comes, we see a surge of calls in the same areas.”

According to Weather.gov, the chances of rain are 70% to 100% until Sunday. The National Weather Service predicts an accumulation of 4 to 6 inches of rain and as much as 8 inches until April 4 for the Arkansas counties of Benton, Carroll, Crawford, Franklin, Madison, Sebastian and Washington, and the Oklahoma counties of Adair, Cherokee, Choctaw, Delaware, Haskell, Latimer, Le Flore, McIntosh, Muskogee, Pittsburg, Pushmataha and Sequoyah.
