NFL Facing Backlash for National Anthem Decision Ahead of 2025 Draft

The NFL draft is one of the biggest ratings draws in professional sports, and with so many eyeballs on the league during the event, it likely wanted to put forth the best fan experience possible.

However, one of the decisions the NFL made in an effort to do that, actually appeared to backfire.

It was revealed on Thursday that the league is having singer/songwriter Stephen Wilson Jr. perform the national anthem before the draft gets underway. Per his personal website, Wilson Jr.’s musical genre falls into a combination of country and alternative rock.

“Stephen Wilson Jr. is a singer/songwriter from rural Southern Indiana. Self-described as ‘Death Cab For Country,’ Stephen Wilson Jr. draws upon indie rock, grunge and country to create a distinct sound that is influenced by artists as diverse as The National, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Nirvana.”

And while there were some fans who were thrilled with the Wilson Jr. announcement, there were nearly as many fans on social media who were just as confused as they were frustrated by the NFL’s decision.

“First. Who??? Second. Why does there need to be a national anthem at a draft???” one fan asked.

“Not to be unpatriotic or anything but we don’t need the anthem at every televised event,” another fan declared.

“Who the [expletive] is Stephen Wilson Jr. and why do we need the national anthem to open the draft?” protested one user.

“Why they singing the national anthem at a [expletive] draft?,” one fan questioned.

“Who???” asked another user.
