Long-time NFL television announcer dies at the age of 80

FAIRFAX, Va. (WKBN) – Long-time ESPN play-by-play announcer Mike Patrick has died at the age of 80.

Published reports say that he died of natural causes in Fairfax, Virginia.

He spent 36 years calling games for ESPN and was the network’s lead voice for “Sunday Night Football” from 1987-2005. He called the Cleveland Browns’ first game upon their return to the NFL in 1999.

In addition, he served as a member of the Cleveland Browns broadcast team for preseason telecasts.

In addition to his work with the NFL, he also announced college football action as well as the College World Series.

Patrick began his broadcasting career in 1966 at WVSC radio in Somerset, Pa.

Throughout his career, he was the play-by-play voice for the Jacksonville Sharks of the World Football League. In addition, he announced Jacksonville University basketball, as well as Maryland football.

He likewise called preseason games for Washington from 1975 to 1982.
