For Williams, it’s a return to his college number from his time at Alabama. He passed on the opportunity this time last year, wearing No. 9 after a call with Matthew Stafford, switching from No. 18, which he called an ode to Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson.
It’s worth remembering that for those switching numbers, an NFL rule dictates they must buy out the existing inventory of their uniforms with the outdated number.
Martin is going back to No. 99 after making some money to allow Za’Darius Smith to wear it after coming over at the trade deadline.
The NFL expanded jersey number flexibility for players back in 2021. Running backs, tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks can wear numbers between No. 0-49 and 80-89.
Defensive backs were able to wear No. 0-49, and defensive linemen had choices between 50-79 and 90-99. For a full list of options, click here.
