Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy was found dead in Houston, Texas on Saturday night, just months after being involved in a fatal car accident. The 24-year-old played for three seasons at LSU after starting his career at Louisiana. In his final season, he caught 58 passes for 866 yards and nine touchdowns.
How did Kyren Lacy die?
The details surrounding Kyren Lacy’s death are not yet known. An LSU official confirmed his death to ESPN, who reported the news, on Sunday. Sources from the WBRZ Investigative Unit are saying the death was a suicide.
What was Kyren Lacy’s legal trouble?
Lacy was accused of causing a car accident that led to the death of a 78-year-old man and fleeing the scene on December 17, 2024. He had allegedly “recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed by crossing the centerline and entering the northbound lane while in a designated no-passing zone”, according to the Louisiana State Police.
“As Lacy was illegally passing the other vehicles, the driver of a northbound pickup truck abruptly braked and swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the approaching Dodge,” a Louisiana State Police news release said.
“Traveling behind the pickup was a 2017 Kia Cadenza whose driver swerved left to avoid the oncoming Dodge Charger. As the Kia Cadenza took evasive action to avoid impact with the Dodge, it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2017 Kia Sorento.”
Herman Hall of Thibodaux, Louisiana, who was a passenger in the car that was his head-on in the crash, later died from injuries sustained in the accident.
Lacy declared for the NFL Draft two days after the crash, but did not play in LSU’s Texas Bowl. On January 12, Lacy turned himself in. He was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run with death, and reckless operation of a vehicle. The grand jury was set to begin hearing evidence in the case on Monday.
Had he been found guilty of negligent homicide, he could have faced up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. Even if he was cleared of the legal charges, his future in the NFL would have been at great risk.
