The Hurricanes’ starting goaltender was forced to leave the game in the second period after a collision with Devils forward Timo Meier.
The skate of the Devils forward got caught with Andersen’s, but then Meier also made contact with the goaltender’s head, which led to him falling back into the net.
Meier was initially hit with a five-minute major, but the penalty was waived off upon video review.
It was the second time a Devils player made contact with Andersen as he was slow to get up after forward Justin Dowling bumped into him during the first period.
Pyotr Kochetkov took over in the Hurricane net with Carolina leading 3-1 in the game and 2-1 in the best-of-seven, first-round series.
Andersen was named the Hurricanes’ starter heading into the playoffs and started off with back-to-back wins before losing in the second overtime in Game 3. The 35-year-old owns a 1.48 goals-against average and .943 save percentage in the post-season.
