Hall of Famer Steve McMichael entering hospice care

Former Bears defensive lineman Steve McMichael, who fought against the ravages of ALS long enough to see himself chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will soon enter hospice care, a source confirmed Wednesday.

McMichael had been on a ventilator in intensive care.

He was inducted into the Hall on Aug. 3 but was unable to attend; instead, he was presented with a gold jacket at his house in Homer Glen. His wife Misty was represented McMichael in Canton Ohio, and also at the Bears’ home opener, where she received his Hall of Fame ring.

McMichael was diagnosed with 36-month onset ALS in January 2021. His illness prompted a push for his induction into the Hall through a Seniors Committee vote. The 67-year-old has been bedridden and unable to speak.

A star defensive end for the Bears from 1981-93, “Mongo” ranks second in team history in sacks and third in tackles. He remained larger-than-life after retirement, serving as a wrestler and wrestling announcer as well as a radio host, minor-league football coach and a mayoral candidate.
