SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (KUTV) — Evacuations were ordered for a South Salt Lake neighborhood after a gas leak ignited into flames.

Residents in the area from 3300 South to 3500 South and from West Temple to 200 West in South Salt Lake were asked to evacuate immediately due to the leak.

Those who could not evacuate were asked to call 801-840-4000.

The call first came in at approximately 5:20 p.m., and officials anticipate the line to be shut down around 10 p.m.

It is unknown when people will be able to return to their homes.

Utah Transit Authority has a warming bus for those who evacuated but have nowhere to go, and are working on securing an evacuation shelter.

Terry Addison, the South Salt Lake Fire Chief, said natural gas made its way into the sewer lines and storm drain.

Crews with the South Salt Lake Fire Department, Unified Fire Authority, and Embridge are at the scene.

Firefighters are not currently battling the flames.

Additionally, Rocky Mountain Power confirmed 2,747 customers are without power, although it is unclear if the two events are connected.
