The Boeing 777 was headed to LAX with 362 customers and 10 crew members onboard, according to United Airlines. The aircraft returned to Newark Airport due to a “possible mechanical issue.”

“We have arranged for a different aircraft to take our customers to Los Angeles this afternoon,” said United Airlines.

FAA equipment issues cause ground stop at Newark Airport Monday afternoon

An unrelated ground stop was issued for planes arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday afternoon, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. As of 3:30 p.m., according to the FAA, the average arrival delay was 15 minutes, and the average departure delay was 90 minutes (and increasing).

“The FAA is reporting equipment issues affecting Philadelphia TRACON, which manages airspace operations around Newark Liberty International Airport. This FAA equipment issue resulted in a ground stop, with very limited flights departing or arriving at Newark since approx. 1:30 p.m.,” said a Port Authority spokesperson in an emailed statement. “Flight activity is expected to resume slowly while the equipment issue is being resolved. Passengers are advised to check with their airline for the latest flight information.”

As of 4 p.m., FlightAware reported 199 delays and 18 cancellations.
