NEW YORK — Mets manager Carlos Mendoza tried to push Edwin Diaz through a second inning on Wednesday afternoon and it did not go according to plan.
After a perfect ninth inning, which included one strikeout, Diaz had to exit the 10th inning under the supervision of the Mets training staff. The nature of Diaz’s removal is not yet clear.
The Mets closer had allowed Bryce Harper — the designated runner — to steal third base before Nick Castellanos tagged a go-ahead RBI single through the left side to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead.
Diaz threw one pitch to J.T. Realmuto before gesturing to the Mets dugout and being removed from the game. The right-hander threw 18 pitches in the outing, two days after he used 11 pitches to notch a dramatic save.
Max Kranick relieved Diaz with one out in the 10th inning.
