Did Cristiano Ronaldo miss Iran trip with Al Nassr due to fear of 99 lashes for adultery?

Cristiano Ronaldo was notably absent from Al Nassr’s squad for their AFC Champions League Round of 16 first-leg clash against Esteghlal FC on 3 March, sparking speculation over the real reason behind his omission. Reports suggested that legal concerns in Iran could have played a role in the decision to leave out Ronaldo from their AFC Champions League last 16 match.

The alleged controversy of ‘99 lashes’ punishment for adultery

The controversy stems from an incident during Ronaldo’s previous visit to Iran in September 2023, when Al Nassr faced Persepolis. During that trip, Ronaldo met Fatemeh Hammami Nasrabadi, a disabled Iranian artist known for painting with her feet. The Portuguese star embraced and kissed her forehead in a heartfelt moment that was widely shared on social media.

However, Iranian law reportedly classifies physical contact between an unmarried man and woman as an offense, with potential penalties including up to 99 lashes for acts considered “adultery.” Although no official legal action was taken at the time, speculation arose that Ronaldo could face punishment if he returned to Iran.

Iranian embassy refutes claims

In response to these rumors, the Iranian Embassy strongly denied any such legal action against Ronaldo. In a statement provided to talkSPORT, a spokesperson clarified: “We strongly deny the issuance of any court ruling against any international athlete in Iran. His sincere and humane meeting with Fatemeh Hamami was also praised and admired by both the people and the country’s sports authorities.”

Why did Ronaldo miss the game?

Despite the Iranian government dismissing the claims, Ronaldo did not travel for Al Nassr’s match against Esteghlal, which ended in a 0-0 draw. The club officially attributed his absence to muscle fatigue, emphasising the need to manage the 40-year-old forward’s fitness, given his prolific form this season. Ronaldo has scored 25 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions for Al Nassr in 2024-25.

Ronaldo’s family in danger?

Meanwhile, Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez are reportedly facing safety concerns. Reports suggest that they have received a series of serious threats, prompting police intervention. According to reports from Portuguese and Spanish media, these threats were issued online with direct and specific warnings that pose a potential danger to Ronaldo, Georgina, and their family.
