Barcelona weren’t as dominant at Stamford Bridge as they were in their home ground at the start of the match. They still got some shots against Hannah Hampton’s posts that foreshadowed what was about to come to the Blues.
Before their barrage of goals, Chelsea Women even a couple of big chances of their own. These were gone to waste, as it’s often the case for the Blues when they face teams domestically.
However this is the Champions League, and the ball punishes with a vengeance — especially against a team like Barcelona. The Catalans aren’t at their best but they still managed to score three goals against us before half-time.
Now with a six-goal lead over Chelsea in the aggregate, Barcelona allowed themselves to open up and invite the Blues into their defensive third while hitting us hard with shots of their own. We were wasting chances up close when Salma Paralluelo got them a fourth goal at the Bridge at the very end of the match.
The Blues still pulled one back via Wieke Kaptein, to repeat in London the same 4-1 scoreline in Barça’s favour in the first leg. Once again we fall to their quality and our own misgivings.
- Sort of a midfield three for Chelsea with Keira Walsh, Sjoeke Nüsken and Erin Cuthbert all starting.
- Really hard to find a way out of a three-goal lead when your team is losing almost every duel to the opposition.
- At least we tried. On to the next season!
- Next up: Manchester United away in the Women’s Super League.
