Tennessee baseball’s undefeated start snapped in 7-6 loss to ETSU in 10 innings

Tennessee baseball is undefeated no more.

The No. 1 Vols lost 7-6 in extra innings against ETSU on Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, suffering their first loss of the season and snapping a 22-game winning streak. They fell a game shy of matching the program record 23-game winning streak, which was achieved in 2022.

Tennessee had not lost since a 9-5 loss to open the College World Series finals against Texas A&M on June 22. It won the next two games against the Aggies to win the program’s first national title. UT won its first 20 games this season, sweeping all its nonconference weeks and its SEC-opening series against Florida.

The Vols (20-1) had a 6-4 lead in the ninth inning after a two-run double from Hunter Ensley in the eighth. ETSU (16-4) tied the game in the top of the ninth on a two-run homer from Jamie Palmese off Vols pitcher Ryan Combs. Grant Gallagher hit a two-out, two-strike homer off Tanner Franklin in the tenth.

Chris Newstrom struck out with two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the 10th to end the game.

The Vols play a three-game series at No. 12 Alabama starting Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Tennessee’s 23-game winning streak in 2022 started with a 10-4 win against Baylor on March 5 in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic and ended with a 3-2 loss to Tennessee Tech in a wood-bat game at Smokies Stadium on April 12.
