STARBASE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — People in Cameron County were startled by a loud rumble that shook windows and rattled dishes.

The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the loud rumble was an explosion from one of SpaceX’s static fire tests. The Starship rocket was being tested at Massey’s Testing Center when it exploded at 11:01 p.m. Wednesday.

ValleyCentral is not aware of any injuries.

SpaceX issued an official statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, regarding the incident.

“At approximately 11 p.m. CT, the Starship preparing for the tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase,” the statement read.

SpaceX stated that a safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation, and all personnel are safe and accounted for.

“Our Starbase team is actively working to save the test site and the immediate surrounding area in conjunction with local officials,” the statement read.

The space company stated that there are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities.

“We ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue,” the statement continued.
