Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have yet to make their red carpet debut as a couple—and tonight’s Met Gala was no exception. The couple chose to stay out of the spotlight, enjoying a quiet evening together as they continue their time off from work.
Their decision not to attend is understandable, as a source told Us Weekly in April that Swift and Kelce had decided to be a little more private. The insider said, “Taylor and Travis have learned that so much attention on their relationship is not the best thing.”
The Met Gala is one of the year’s most high-profile events, so it’s no surprise that the couple—who’ve spent the past few months enjoying a break from the spotlight—opted to sit this one out.
Swift last attended the Met Gala in 2016, nearly a decade ago. That year, she served as a co-chair—and it was also where her connection with Tom Hiddleston began, sparking their brief but memorable summer romance. The singer immortalized their meeting in her song “Getaway Car.”
Kelce, meanwhile, has never attended the Met Gala.
Kelce and Swift have purposely kept a lower profile this spring. On April 1, a source explained to Us Weekly that following Swift’s Eras Tour and Kelce’s NFL season, the two stars “needed time for themselves. Taylor and Travis are doing great, and they’re still very much together and in love. They’re just taking a break from the public eye.”
Kelce was photographed on a New York City photo shoot this past Thursday but has not been seen out since.
Swift, for her part, has laid low since the Super Bowl in February. Still, she hasn’t shied away from living her life on her own terms, even with the constant spotlight that follows her. The star told Time in December 2023, “Over the years, I’ve learned I don’t have the time or bandwidth to get pressed about things that don’t matter. Yes, if I go out to dinner, there’s going to be a whole chaotic situation outside the restaurant. But I still want to go to dinner with my friends. Life is short. Have adventures. Me locking myself away in my house for a lot of years—I’ll never get that time back. I’m more trusting now than I was six years ago.”
She added that she is happy to share her love story with Kelce: “When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care. The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
