The actor, 55, dressed to impress at the annual fundraising event on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where he serves as a co-chair alongside F1 driver Lewis HamiltonA$AP RockyPharrell Williams and Anna Wintour, as well as honorary chair LeBron James.

Domingo stepped out on the red carpet wearing a dramatic bright blue pleated cape from Valentino draped to the floor with an embellished collar. The arrival paid tribute in part to late fashion journalist André Leon Talley, with a cape reminiscent to the silk kaftan the Vogue editor wore to the event in 2011, among other references.

On Vogue‘s live stream with Ego Nwodim and Teyana Taylor, he described additional inspiration as “Othello the moor, kings, the color blue — a color that, when we were doing our research … [we found] a free slave wanted to wear his finest blue, superfine wool suit. It gives you choir, it gives you king, all those moments.”

Last October, Vogue revealed the first details of the 2025 Met Gala. The A-list event, held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, is fundraising for The Costume Institute — and putting the spotlight on its spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which is also this year’s Met Gala theme.

According to Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton, the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”

Through a curation of garments, paintings and photographs, the exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.

The event’s dress code is “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. The gala will also have a star-studded host committee: Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, as well as Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese and Usher.

In a May 2025 cover story for Vogue, Domingo opened up about pulling together his Met Gala ensemble, which involved meeting with Miller.

The actor recalled being in the presence of Black mannequins during the meeting. “I am a Black man who loves style, loves tailoring, and it struck me that I had never seen images like that—of myself, saying, I belong in these clothes,” he said. “I always had to look for a vision outside of myself.”

Domingo made his Met Gala debut in 2024 when he rocked a striking black and white caped ensemble that honored late stars Chadwick Boseman and André Leon Talley.

The Sing Sing star wore a Willy Chavarria suit consisting of a bright white jacket with structured shoulders and a sweeping cape to the floor — reminiscent of Boseman’s iconic white caped Versace look worn at the 2018 Met Gala — and black wide-leg pants. He paired the ensemble with a matching corsage and Christian Louboutin shoes.

Domingo held a bouquet of white flowers wrapped in a black satin cloth while posing for pictures. He also donned silver and gold embellished jewelry by David Yurman while adding extra flair with gray contact lenses.

His caped suit was a touching nod to the many capes worn by Talley to the annual fashion event — where he worked as Vogue’s red carpet correspondent for several years.

Speaking to Live from E!, Domingo explained of his look, “They both wore capes when they were at the Met. Everything I do, I feel like it’s gotta be for the culture. It’s gotta be more than just for me.”

More recently, the Emmy winner rocked a custom Valentino look at the 2025 Oscars that was created by creative director Alessandro Michele.

The ensemble featured a bright red shantung silk double-breasted tailored jacket with black lapel, black wool trousers and a red shantung silk guru collar shirt. He also wore a belt with tassels closed at the waist.
