The Giants took two of three from the Rangers over the weekend to move into first in the NL West, tied with the Dodgers atop the division and 1½ games ahead of the Padres. The Giants are also tied for the second-best record in the majors and rank sixth with a plus-28 run differential. The Padres won last year’s series, 7-6.

The Padres were just swept for the first time and have lost seven of their last nine games to lose their grip on both baseball’s best record and the top spot in the NL West. The Padres’ plus-23 run differential ranks seventh in the majors.

San Francisco Giants: The Giants rank in the bottom third of the league in batting (.229, 22nd) and slugging (.377, 21st) but second in bullpen ERA (2.30). They have a .663 OPS over the last week, with only two regulars above .800: DH Wilmer Flores (.895) and OF Heliot Ramos (.839). OF Jung Hoo Lee is hitting .250/.314/.344 over that stretch, 3B Matt Chapman is hitting .114/.303/.269 and SS Willy Adames is hitting .233/.314/.233.
San Diego: The Padres have lost four games in a row and seven of their last nine. They’re hitting .208 over their last nine games. Take away Fernando Tatis Jr. maintaining his MVP pace, and the shorthanded Padres are hitting .189 over that stretch. Giants RHP Logan Webb (3-1, 1.98 ERA) | The Giants’ ace has a 3.22 ERA while collecting NL Cy Young votes over the last three seasons, which includes finishing as the runner-up in 2023. His strikeout rate this year (10.9 per nine innings) is well above his career rate (8.2 per nine innings). Webb has a 2.90 ERA in 80⅔ career innings against the Padres, but he allowed 10 earned runs in 23 innings (3.91 ERA) last year.
Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (4-1, 1.20 ERA) | The Padres have won five of his six starts and all three at Petco Park, where Pivetta has a 0.45 ERA and is holding opponents to a .306 OPS over 20 innings. Pivetta has a 5.40 ERA in 13⅓ career innings against the Giants, but he has not faced them since 2019, when he allowed five earned runs over three relief appearances.

Giants RHP Landen Roupp (2-1, 4.56 ERA) | The second-year starter has two quality starts in five trips to the mound so far this season, but he allowed five runs — three earned — in 3⅔ innings in his last start. Roupp turned in eight scoreless inning across four appearances against the Padres last year, including five shutout innings in a start in September.
Padres RHP Michael King (3-1, 2.18 ERA) | King’s lone quality start this year was the shutout he completed on April 13. He’s since allowed three runs—two earned—over 10⅔ innings over two starts, both losses for a team that’s struggling to score runs. King struck out 18 over 17 innings (1.59 ERA0) across three starts last year against the Giants.

San Diego: RHP Logan Gillaspie hit the injured list after straining his left oblique on Saturday. OFs Jackson Merrill (hamstring), Brandon Lockridge (hamstring) and Jason Heyward (knee) and 1B Luis Arraez (concussion) could return this week and 2B Jake Cronenworth (rib) could be a week behind them.
