“American Idol” contender John Foster brought his songwriting chops — and some teardrops on his guitar — to his performance on Sunday night’s episode of the singing competition.
While vying for a spot in the Top 14, the 18-year-old Louisiana artist sang an original tune called “Tell That Angel I Love Her,” which he wrote for his late friend, Maggie Dunn. The song included the poignant refrain, “Though we may not know the reason / It’s not for us to understand / Lord, won’t you tell that angel I love her / As soon as you can?”
At the end of the performance, Foster said “I love you, Maggie” with tears in his eyes. Speaking with “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, Foster shared that Dunn and another friend, Caroline Gill, died in December of 2022.
Foster noted that Dunn’s mother and her friend were in the audience, calling them “the strongest women I know.”
“Idol” judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan applauded Foster’s original work and heartfelt delivery.
“I love that you keep it very traditional,” Underwood said, noting his more old-fashioned approach to country music. “I feel like that’s who you are. I love that in this song, we got to hear a sweet, tender side of your voice that honestly I didn’t know you had.”
“You’ve kind of been a wildcard for me the whole time, but what you just did there removed all doubts in my mind that you deserve to be here,” added Bryan.
“Idol” viewers will determine if Foster advances to the Top 14, as they vote via text, the “American Idol” app, and the “American Idol” website. Voting closes on Monday, April 21 at 9 a.m. Eastern time.
