TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WPEC) — A suspect is in custody after six people were injured in a shooting at Florida State University Thursday afternoon, officials confirmed to The Associated Press.
One person was in critical condition, a spokesperson for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said, and other patients were in serious condition.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a social media post that the Justice Department is in touch with FBI agents who are on the scene.
FBI Director Kash Patel said his team had been briefed on the shooting and the FBI Jacksonville team was on the ground assisting.
“We will provide full support to local law enforcement as needed,” Patel wrote on X. “Please keep the FSU community in your prayers.”
The University issued an emergency alert on Thursday after reports of an active shooter near the Student Union. The university’s alert system advised students and staff to “continue to seek shelter and await further instructions.”
Authorities confirmed that police are either on the scene or en route to the location. The alert emphasized the importance of locking doors, staying away from windows, and being prepared to take additional protective measures.
“This is an emergency message for Florida State University Tallahassee Campus,” the alert stated. “Continue to shelter in place.”

Videos show the situation unraveling at the university and students evacuating a building on campus.
The Tallahassee Police Department said multiple law enforcement agencies were actively working to secure the campus and that a student reunification point was established at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting while he was hosting the Italian Prime Minister at the Oval Office.
“I’ve been briefed on the Florida State University, Tallahassee, active shooting. I guess it’s an active shooter,” Trump said. “Fully briefed as to where we are right now. It’s a shame. Horrible thing, horrible that things like this take place, and we’ll have more to say about it later.”
Congressmen Rick Scott, Byron Donalds and Gov. Ron DeSantis commented on their social media regarding the situation on campus.
Sen. Scott said he has been in touch with law enforcement regarding the shooting.
Rep. Donalds told students to be safe and continue to shelter in place.
The situation remains active, and the university urged everyone on campus to stay alert for further updates.
