Hololive’s Gawr Gura Updates Fans With Sad Announcement

Fans of the world’s biggest anime virtual girl streamer agency are about to experience the end of an era. Gawr Gura has announced her graduation from Hololive EN.

Gawr Gura, one of the founding members of Hololive EN when it launched in September 2020, announced her graduation in a livestream video titled “Important Announcement.” The video, seen below, similar to previous graduation announcements from Hololive VTubers or otherwise, featured a beautiful but melancholic image of the talent with a simple headline stressing the serious nature of the video. She’s the latest and arguably the biggest talent to graduate from the popular VTuber agency so far, which has already experienced a devastating loss from previous and upcoming graduations of Nanashi Mumei, Celes Fauna, Amelia Watson and Tsukumo Sana — which only covers the graduations of English talents and not the recent graduations from the original Japanese branch.

Hololive VTuber Gawr Gura Announces Graduation Following Management & Company Disagreements

Gura’s graduation announcement is a bitter pill for Hololive fans who have already experienced so much loss only four months into 2025. However, longtime fans of the smug anime shark girl have come to terms with this disappointing possibility due to Gura’s limited activity as a streamer that has stretched out for years — which Gura herself has joked about on stream. Nonetheless, Gawr Gura’s impact on the English branch of Hololive and VTuber culture in North America is undeniable. Her presence at concerts, conventions and public sporting events, online or in-person, has always resulted in massive turnouts and record-breaking sales. To casual and diehard fans, Gawr Gura was not only the face of Hololive but also of VTuber culture.

In her official announcement video, Gura said she was graduating from Hololive because of disagreements with management and the company’s direction. Her comments were echoed in Hololive Production’s official statement of her graduation in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter). Gawr Gura’s final live stream is set for May 1, 2025.

World’s Largest VTuber Agency Is Setting an Unfortunate Trend

Along with the aforementioned EN talents’ graduations, the Japanese side of Hololive Production is also experiencing an unfortunate acceleration of graduations. Murasaki Shion, who has been with the Japanese agency since 2018, announced her graduation in March 2025, which is currently set for April 26, 2025. Additionally, Minato Aqua graduated in August 2024, followed by Sakamata Chloe in January 2025. Although these talents have expressed no ill will towards the company — with some stressing poor health as the leading cause of the graduations, such as Chloe and Mumei — they have, one way or another, cited complications with management and a new direction for the agency that many are not willing to follow.

An official statement about Hololive’s new direction has never been released. However, many fans assume it’s related to the company’s increased focus on idol-like concert performances, musical releases and sponsored content over livestreaming.

Motoaki Tanigo, better known as “Yagoo” to the VTuber community, addressed the alarming rate of talent leaving the agency in March when Shion announced her graduation. Yagoo said on X, “We sincerely apologize for everyone’s concern about the continuous announcements about graduations. We feel the same loneliness as everyone else every time we see a talent off. We have established a system where talents can concentrate on their activities with peace of mind by providing support from various angles, such as Hololive EXPO, 3D live, corporate tie-ups, and music production support, so that each talent can maximize their talents. However, some areas still need improvement, and I am creating opportunities to talk directly with the talents and work to improve. We will do our best to ensure that both the talents and the fans can smile. Thank you for your continued support.”
