LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Elaine Wynn, the co-founder of a collection of Las Vegas casinos, has died at 82.
The family foundation confirms her passing in a news release just before 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Ms. Wynn and her former husband, Steve Wynn, started two companies together, Mirage Resorts and Wynn Resorts.
Elaine Wynn is best known for molding the modern-day landscape of Las Vegas from revamping the iconic Golden Nugget on Fremont to creating the luxe Bellagio on the infamous Strip. Every Strip property that came after it was influenced by the idea that Vegas was an experience, not just a destination.
She went on to open two identical towers: The Wynn and Encore.
In addition to her contributions to Las Vegas, she was dedicated to philanthropy through the Elaine Wynn and Family Foundation.
She also championed education, serving as president of the Nevada State Board of Education and chair of the UNLV Foundation.
Wynn also has a local elementary school in the central valley that bears her name.
“We are all deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Elaine Wynn, and send our condolences to her daughters, grandchildren, and her many close friends. As co-founder and one of the largest shareholders of Wynn Resorts, she helped to create and grow the company to become the most esteemed luxury resort brand in the world. Her many talents and special touches are indelibly imprinted on the company and still evident throughout our resorts.
Elaine cared deeply about the employees of our resorts. The current and former employees who worked alongside her to create Wynn and Encore Las Vegas cherish the many fond memories they have of her, especially of when they opened Wynn Las Vegas with her 20 years ago this month.
She was a tireless advocate for Las Vegas, for children and their education, and for the arts. We’re grateful that the enduring sense of philanthropy she instilled in our company continues to this day.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.
