Two people are dead and police have taken a suspect into custody following a shooting at Florida State University’s campus in Tallahassee on Thursday, April 17.

The university said on social media just after noon that an active shooter had been reported near the university campus’ student union.

“An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union,” the university said in a post on X shared just after 12 p.m., instructing anyone in the vicinity to seek shelter. “Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

A Tallahassee police spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE that a suspect had been taken in custody. The person was found with a handgun on them, and a shotgun was found in the student union building, CNN reported, citing a law enforcement official. Another gun was found in the individual’s car, the outlet reported.

The Florida State University Police Department is in charge of the investigation, the Leon County Sheriff’s Department tells PEOPLE.

CNN reported Thursday afternoon that 2 people had died in the gunfire. Multiple others were injured in critical or serious condition, according to CNN and the Tallahassee Democrat.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said on X that his office is investigating.

FSU said just before 2 p.m. that all classes scheduled for April 17 had been cancelled, while home athletics events are cancelled through Sunday, April 20.

FSU was previously the site of a shooting in 2014, when a gunman opened fire in a university library and wounded three students. Police ultimately shot the gunman dead.
